Microsoft Bing to charge developers for API

For anyone who’s using the Bing search API in their apps (all eight of you), prepare for a rude shock.

In a post on the official Bing blog, Microsoft announced that they will move to a monthly pricing model of $40 for up to 20,000 queries per month. The move from the free to paid model will kick off in the coming weeks, but at the moment Bing services will remain free to use from apps.

Microsoft argue that the paid model will give developers access to ‘fresher results’ and improved relevancy, but it remains to be seen how developers will react to the price announcement once it actually kicks in.
