Online retailer charges tax for using Internet Explorer 7

Online retailer Kogan has decided that they have spent, or rather wasted, enough of their IT department’s resources trying to make their updated site work with the extremely outdated IE7 browser.

As per their blog post, It’s not only costing us a huge amount, it’s affecting any business with an online presence, and costing the Internet economy millions.”

So what they have done instead is to impose a 6.8% tax to discourage users from using the 6 year old browser. Of course, anyone using the latest version of IE, Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Opera won’t have to pay anything extra.

As Internet citizens, we all have a responsibility to make the Internet a better place. By taking these measures, we are doing our bit. This will help us increase our efficiency, help keep prices for all smart shoppers down, and hopefully help eradicate the world of the pain in the rear that is IE7!”
