It seems that Research In Motion just can’t cut a break. Already plagued with problems of its own, RIM is now being forced to pay Mformation Technologies fees due in a legal case where the BlackBerry maker apparently infringed on patents belonging to Mformation.
Jurors decided that RIM’s BlackBerry Enterprise Server infringed on patents from Mformation and awarded damages of $8 for every device BlackBerry has sold. With 18.4 million units sold to date, that clocks in a legal bill of $147 million.
RIM said in a statement that they still believe that they owned the technologies being used, and that Mformation has no real claim in the case. RIM has worked hard for many years to independently develop its leading-edge BlackBerry technology and industry-leading intellectual property portfolio, and RIM does not believe that the Mformation patent in question is valid,” the company said in a statement.
This ruling comes at a time where RIM is already struggling to compete with the likes of Apple and Android, and recently announced an unsurprising first quarter loss for the company.
