“Uh oh, now I’m the guy who liveblogged the Osama raid without knowing it.”
Those were the words of Shoaib Aktar (no, not the Pakistani fast bowler) when he realized that what he was tweeting about for quite some time past midnight was directly connected to the biggest news of this year (sorry Prince): Osama Bin Laden’s death.
Aktar, who describes himself as a software consultant “taking a break from the rat-race by hiding in the mountains with his laptop”, heard a helicopter hovering above Abbottabad at 1AM, followed by “a huge window shaking bang” before realizing that what he was witnessing was the biggest moment in American history, when the US forces raided Osama’s remarkably large compound and shot him dead.
Naturally, Aktar was not only flooded with media requests but also saw his Twitter following raise exponentially – so much so that he had to create a custom filter on his Gmail account to sort the “is now following” messages that popped every min.
