Samsung to start their own Facebook

Samsung officials have confirmed that the company will start a new social networking service, akin to Facebook,  as soon as early next year. The new site will be accessible via internet connected devices such as TVs, Bluray players, and smartphones.

The idea is to build a network that’s accessible not only on Samsung products, but also other devices, a direction in which Samsung has already established itself with their ChatOn service. The recently launched IM application is available not only on Samsung’s Google Android powered devices, but also on Android, iOS, BlackBerry and iOS powered smartphones.

Samsung will be building their new social networking site, internally called ‘Samsung Facebook’, on their ‘Family Story’ platform, which they showed off in January, during CES 2012. Family Story itself is a social networking platform which focuses on chatting, photo sharing and calendar schedules.

By the end of the year, we will have a polished and finished version of Family Story that will be offered first to Samsung device users for free. The new service will become available in the first quarter of next year at the earliest,” said an official to Korea Times.

Subsequently, Samsung Facebook will be based on the Family Story platform. In order to handle the massive amounts of data for their social networking service, Samsung will integrate their service with Amazon’s cloud computing platform.

“The eventual goal is to expand our social media service across different devices from different companies across different mobile platforms. That includes cameras, televisions and blue-ray players,” the official said
