If you think of the company Mozilla, the first thing that jumps to mind is their friendly web-browser, Firefox.
But ever heard of Thunderbird, the open source email program? While Mozilla mostly plugs Firefox, Thunderbird has been running alongside for a while now, giving users an alternative to email programs such as Outlook. Sadly though in a blog post published by Mitchell Baker, head of the Mozilla Foundation, the company announced that it would be moving the Thunderbird team into other projects, and that a final build of Thunderbird would be posted online, along with security updates and limited development from the community.
Much of Mozilla’s leadership â€" including that of the Thunderbird team â€" has come to the conclusion that on-going stability is the most important thing, and that continued innovation in Thunderbird is not a priority for Mozilla’s product efforts. As a result, the Thunderbird team has developed a plan that provides both stability for Thunderbird’s current state and allows the Thunderbird community to innovate if it chooses.”
While the move might upset some fans of Thunderbird, it’s an inevitable move in a world where most email user prefer to reply and access email on the go, rather than being tied down to a desktop email client. An email from Jb Piacentino, Thunderbird Managing Director, he confirms the move of Thunderbird’s development resources to other projects, and hopes that the community will take up the development challenge.
